My name is Michael Blake. I am currently researching the Dyson family, which was one of the four main origins of my wife's family. My wife is Brenda Heyworth (maiden name) and she was born in 1944.
Brenda's mother was Edna Brown d of John Brown and Alice Dyson. J and A married in Bolton in 1903. Alice in turn was the d of Harry Dyson (1855-1907) and he the son of Edmund Dyson (Kirkburton 1812- Lancashire 1870) and Mary Horn (1818-1861). Edmund's father was Joseph Dyson and he I think was born about 1781 in West Yorks and died in about 1862, I think in Kirkburton.
After that online information becomes very messy. In fact I think some people have got their information mixed up - after all there were/are a lot of Dysons in the Kirkburton area. What I cannot clarify is who was the 'Elizabeth' that Joseph married (from Lepton I think), and what other children did they have besides Edmund. I have got Martha, George and Hannah, but I am not confident about this. Websites also suggest there were other children who may have died young.
Can you confirm any of those earlier details for me, or point me in the right direction to find out?
John Hemingway Woodhead born 1842, Shelf, Yorkshire. He married Jane Allerton
and has a family in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland.
His children are Mary E, Susannah I, Flora and Emily.
What started all this was I got a newspaper clipping for a Decapitation at
Grantham March 30, 1899, of a John Hemingway Woodhead, lately carrying on
business there as a builder and contractor.
Most of the census I have on John Hemingway Woodhead, lists him as a joiner,
builder. Also on his daughter Flora's marriage cert. he is listed as a builder
contractor.
What I can't find is his death notice and I can't find him in the 1901 census.
His wife Jane in 1901, is living with daughter Susannah and lists herself as
married?
In 1911, Jane the wife is living with the daughter Emily, and lists herself as
married?
Did he die?
Is there a site for coroner investigations?
The story I was sent said it was in the Yorkshire Herald and The York Herald.
Can anyone search these newspapers and find another article on this Decapitated
at Grantham story, March 30, 1899?
John Hemingway Woodhead is a common name in my Woodhead's. The first is born,
1806, Shelf, Yorkshire. (son of Peter Woodhead and Susannah Hemingway) His son
is 1842, and his grandson, I believe is 1906.
Any help would be appreciated.

While there's a flurry of activity I thought I'd mention my WOODHEAD
interest.
I have a Hannah WOODHEAD who married William ROBINSON in Halifax on 10
Aug 1820; her residence was given as Brighouse. Later they moved to
Leeds, and the 1851 census shows her as aged 51 and born in Brighouse -
a widow and a dressmaker.
I've have plenty to keep me busy on other lines, so haven't done much as
yet to look for Hannah's origins. However, if anyone can spot a
connection to give me a head start when I do get round to looking for
her parents, I'd be very grateful.

My Woodheads are from Netherthong in the parish of Almondbury, Yorkshire . I have Thomas WOODHEAD who married Gracia (suname unknown) and had children Johannes B 1575, Georgius b 1577, Anna b 1579, Christopher b1582, Sorothea b 1584, Senava b 1586, Maria b 1593 and Gratia b 1597.
Gratia WOODHEAD married (2) Johannes BEAUMONT in 1604, two years after the death of Thomas WOODHEAD.
Maria married Johannis THEWLIS in 1621.
The only Thomas WOODHEAD I can find to suit a possible marriage to Gratia was born in 1551 at Halifax . Am I on the right track? Can anyone help?
I was interested to come across you in the Woodhead family genealogy forum. My own line is of Quaker Woodheads whom I have traced back to 1702, descending from a John Woodhead who lived at The Mount, near Holmfirth. As you may know, The Mount is very small, comprising only about half a dozen houses. Several of these were occupied by other Quaker families, and it may even be that all the people living there around 1700 were Quakers. There were quite a few Woodheads living in the Holmfirth -- Kirkburton -- Shepley area and it may be that the lines can be sorted out only by working on all of them together. I gave up on this over 30 years ago, but of course we have a number of new facilities now. I should be very glad to learn of your progress. The names in my list are all Quakers, so don't appear in the local parish registers. I believe John Woodhead was a Friend by Convincement, so his birth record probably appears somewhere in the Anglican registers (along with a number of other John Woodheads in the region). My line is as follows: John Woodhead of The Mount marr. Sarah Morehouse of The Mount, 1702 He died 1757, she 1754. Son Joseph Woodhead (1710-1793) marr. Lydia Dickinson 1737 Son Godfrey Woodhead (1739-1809) marr. Dinah Knowles 1775 Son Samuel Woodhead (1777-1829) marr. Jane Firth 1802 Son Firth Woodhead (1811-1874) marr. Mary Miller 1844 Son Charles Firth Woodhead (1854-1940) was my grandfather.

I have
been trying to trace my fathers family with out a lot of luck so far. seem to
have hit a brick wall. I have an Annie Elizabeth Woodhead Marrying a Harry
Storey 19 Nov 1898 in the Parish of Looks like Birstal? in york. Her father is
Wellington Woodhead who was a slater. His father was a John Storey who was
already deceased at the time of the marriage. Strangely enough I cant find a
cenus record for Annie or Wellington. You'd think with a name like that he would
stick out.
Hope some one out there can help.
London, Bethnal Green

West Yorkshire
I believe my John Woodhead m Fanny Mellor even though I have certificates stating it was Fanny Hobson. John Woodhead m Fanny Mellor 4 Sept 1815 in Kirkburton, Yorkshire. John b Almondbury and Fanny Kirkburton. Children were Ann b 1815 Hannah b 1817 Benjamin (my ancestor) b 1820 Joseph b 1821 Mary b 1822 Mary b 1828 And John b 1831. My theory about Fanny Mellor comes from the fact that their son John was born in Penniston Yorkshire. (as says his marriage certificate here in Australia this also name his mother as Fanny Hobson) On Family Search there is a birth of a John Woodhead in Penniston which makes it around the same time as our John. Also in the two John & Fanny's m at about the same time. And in the 1851 census they have that son John was born Peniston. I am yet to find records of a Fanny Hobson or a John m Fanny Hobson. Interestingly enough however Benjamin was christened by a Rev Hobson. I have not yet traced a birth for a Fanny Hobson or Mellor at the time around her age although there are a few Fanny Mellor's that come close. (I am going by her age on census) I have tried to find a marriage for a Hobson to a Mellor thinking her mother may have remarried or married but no luck there either. Any hints or ideas would be great.
Holmfirth
I have a Benjamin Woodhead who married Sarah unknown there children are
Samuel Woodhead 1820, Joseph Woodhead 1821 & James Woodhead 1826.
Samuel Woodhead married Sarah Ann Buckley and there children are
Wilson Woodhead 1842, Alfred Woodhead 1844, Benjamin Woodhead 1849, Arthur Woodhead 1853, Sarah H Woodhead 1854 & Mary E Woodhead 1855.
They were all from the Holmfirth area.
Arthur Woodhead married Ruth Hannah Howard and had 6 girls and 1 boy. Some of them moved to the Leeds Area. This is my fathers line.
My father told me as a boy he'd been told the Woodhead's owned Huddersfield Examiner and Dewsbury Reporter but dosen't know how he's connected.

My Grandfather's second
wife was widowed when they married. Her first husband's mother was
Martha Ann Woodhead (born Leeds, Yorkshire), daughter of Charles
Woodhead who I believe was born 1826 in Shepley and christened 15 Oct
1826 the son of Joshua Woodhead and Martha Hinchcliffe who were
married 23 Jan 1820 at Kirkburton. Charles evidently moved from
Shepley to Leeds at some point but his roots certainly seem to be in
the general area we are looking at. Joshua is where the line stops at
the moment, but it would be very interesting if it tied into the other
Woodheads anywhere.

I am happy that my Mark Woodhead is shown
in the 1891 Census as married to Mary and living at 181 Stechford
Village, Yardley, Birmingham where he is shown as 40 years of age
and born in Yorkshire. (approx birthdate is 1851) He is described
as a wheelwright.
In the 1901 Census, living at 6 Clarence
Terrace, Thurnscoe, Doncaster is 'Thomas' Woodhead, aged 40 years
born Halifax, Yorkshire. He is married to Mary and is described as
a wheelwright. My grandfather is Arthur
Woodhead.
My grandfather, Arthur's, birth certificate
shows his father as Mark Woodhead with his occupation as a
wheelwright and Arthur's baptism record shows his father as Mark
Woodhead, a wheelwright.
